Go Wild!

Hungry Lemurs
I thought I'd start my blog by sharing something I started doing at the beginning of this year. If you've read my bio you'll have seen that I've recently finished my degree in Zoology and am a bit animal mad. Now it's time for me to go into the big world of work but I'm still a bit lost as to what I actually want to do. So in March this year I signed up to volunteer at Shepreth Wildlife Park just outside of Cambridge, to give myself a bit of experience in a field of animal work I hadn't done before. I absolutely love it, it's given me real insight into just how much hard work goes into maintaining a zoo and its wild tenants, and the efforts made to educate the public and raise awareness of the need for conservation to save our furry friends.

Grapes were a clear favorite
As well as this, it's great fun. As silly as it sounds I didn't realise just how close I would be allowed to get to the animals and how much involvement I would have in the daily husbandry routines. As you can see from the photos above I went over to Lemur Island a couple of weeks ago to feed them some yummy fruit, its amazing how relaxed they are around the keepers and as you can see were very at ease with me feeding them some grapes. I'd honestly recommend volunteering and gaining work experience in a range of areas to anyone wanting to work with animals or related fields such as conservation. Not only because it gives you first hand knowledge of the job involved but from personal experience it is highly competitive and good grades alone aren't always enough to land you the job.

If you'd like to know more about Shepreth Wildlife Park follow the link to their website where you can find out all about their animals and what they do, if you are interested in the volunteering scheme click here for the application form. Alternatively if you are not local to the Cambridge area you can find a list of Zoos and Aquariums that offer work experience and volunteer schemes here

I hope you enjoyed my first post, please let me know what you thought or any questions you have.

Thanks Ash x
